Ghana Hairdressers and Beauticians Association (GHABA) was formed and duly registered in 1972. Founding members are Madam Margaret Sappor, Madam Millicent Ocansey, Madam Funny Otchere, Rev Bertha Dollar of blessed memory, Mrs Irene Afriyie, Mrs Victoria Essuman and a few others who joined later
It is a non-political, non-racial, non-religious and non-ideological association. GHABA is registered with the Registrar General’s Department under the Companies Act 1963(ACT 179). GHABA was formed to bring together hairdressers (Master Craft Persons and Trainees), owners of beauty salons, Hair Braiders and Barbers in Ghana under one umbrella to promote their businesses as well as align the hairdressing industry in Ghana to international standards. GHABA was the first association in the beauty and cosmetology industry to join the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU).
GHABA has over 8000 members represented in all 16 regions in Ghana. The affairs of the association is steered by the National Executive Council (NEC) made up of Presidents, Secretaries and Financial Secretaries drawn from all the regions. The NEC is led by the National Officers.
One major activity organised by the Association is the Annual Hair Week celebration which showcases the core element of our profession. The association also organises Health walks, fun games, symposia and workshops to entertain and educate members. Such activities are sometimes organised at all branches with supervision by the National Executives. As part of our social responsibilities, we make donations to the less-privileged in society, like orphanages, hospitals etc.
